(1) “Quit while you’re ahead”: card playing wisdom
Nate Silver’s new book, “On the Edge: the Art of Risking Everything”* offers plenty of insights into using probabilistics in everyday life, especially poker. You’ll learn how to do the mental math of calculating “pot odds” (your chance of winning compared with the share of the pot you are contributing), “fold equity” (how much to bluff), and “blockers” (which of your cards that decrease your opponents’. chances of winning). For those of you strategists who like cards (and those who draw inferences from card games), this book comes highly recommended.
“The people changing the world are doing it by thinking like poker players, Silver contends. If we want to keep up, we’ll have to learn the mindset of the successful gambler.”**
